The Land that Holds us
The Land That Holds Us is an exhibition about the still points in our turning world (T. S. Eliot), those moments when we begin to understand that ‘the earth abides forever’ (Ecclesiastes
1:4). They were here before us, these fields and hills, these woods and loughs,
and they will still be here when we are gone. Perhaps that is why we return to
these places, again and again. We have our rituals, places where we walk, swim and
climb. We know these places intimately, and yet we find them always new. And so
they stop us in our tracks. We see a certain light, the day’s last glow on a
mountain, a burst of light before darkness falls. We hear the sudden movements
of a hare, and feel a slow wind through the trees above us. Then the land falls
into darkness and we stand beneath the night sky. Tiny points of light begin to
emerge in the landscape, hints of hearth and home, of our families and the lives we live.
When I paint I want to capture some of these feelings.
The stillness. The wonder. The sense of space.
The pull of landscape and belonging.
I hope these paintings will slow you down, remind you of the places you belong.
These paintings are a call to gratitude for the extraordinary gift of 'The Land that Holds us.'

About me
I was brought up in the County Antrim countryside and have always been drawn to its distinctive landscapes and seascapes. Inspired by the design in nature I saw around me, I pursued a career in architecture, studying at the Mackintosh School, Glasgow School of Art. I thrived on the study of light and space and our environment, achieving a first class honours degree and a Masters in architecture. As an architect, design and control of our environment is everything. As a painter I am particularly interested in the uncontainable nature of the sea and sky. The sky, in the words of Constable, is 'the source of light in nature and governs everything' and I am fascinated by its forms and colour. I find my subject matter in the fields, forests and shores around my home. Using acrylics and oils with brushes and pallet knives, I work to capture disappearing moments of places I love. I paint in order to hold on to vanishing beauty. In the light between the land and the sky, the world is beautiful because it constantly disappears.
I hope you enjoy my 'reflections of land, sea and sky'.
My work is available to purchase as limited edition prints, cards and acrylic and oil originals. A number of framed originals are available from A Broader Picture, Painted earth ,2020art and The Designerie.
